It's official: House GOP passes plan to end Medicare, cut taxes on millionaires

Medicare

So they've done it. In lockstep, House Republicans have walked over the edge of the cliff and put themselves on record supporting the repeal of Medicare while extending trillions of dollars in tax breaks to millionaires.

By a vote of 235-193, with all but 4 Republicans voting in favor and unified opposition from Democrats, the House approved Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's 2012 budget plan. As you know, the Ryan plan would end Medicare as we know it, replacing it with subsidies for private insurance and it would simultaneously spend trillions of dollars to reduce tax rates on the wealthiest Americans. And now it is the official position of the GOP.

Update: Here's a link to the roll call.

Another update: GOP no votes are Rehberg, McKinley, Jones, and Paul.

And more: Harry Reid says the plan is DOA in the Senate. DCCC says it will cost GOP the House in 2012.

Yet another: Charlie Cook compared the GOP's Medicare-repeal plan to a political death wish.
